As part of the strategic plan to expand biomedical and health science research in emerging fields, the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Watson College, Binghamton University (BU), State University of New York (SUNY) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level, with an expected start date as early as January 4, 2025.
BU is ranked among the top 40 and a premier R1 public research university. University’s direct impact on the regional economy has reached $1.2 billion in recent years. The recent $113 million research award from the Economic Development Agency (EDA) further catalyzes and fosters knowledge transfer and partnerships across industries and academia to advance technology development and innovation in science and engineering and the $160 million NSF ENGINE grant helps the university to build ecosystems for science discovery and technology advancement. The university attracts outstanding students and award-winning faculty including 2019 Nobel Laureate Dr. Stanley Whittingham who are partners in active discovery. The Department has recently launched a $1.6 million workforce training program partnered with the School of Management to develop a Biomanufacturing Project Management Certificate Program funded by BioMADE.
We seek applications from candidates in all areas of biomedical engineering; however, we are particularly interested in the following area: Biomaterials. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness are preferred.
The candidate will be expected to lead efforts to broaden the university's Road Map Initiative in the Transdisciplinary Area of Excellence in Health Science (https://binghamton.edu/tae/). The Department is particularly strong in advanced biomanufacturing, stem cells, tissue engineering/regenerative medicine, nanomedicine, cardiovascular engineering, biomaterials, organ-on-a-chip, wearable biosensors, and biomechanics. The BME Department is the home of the Center of Biomanufacturing for Regenerative Medicine (CBRM). The Department has recently formed a joint Institute for Regenerative Medicine with the Upstate Medical University. The Department hosts a NIST PREP postdoc and graduate training program in standards and technology. The candidate will be expected to develop a plan that synergizes our strategic partnership with the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Upstate Medical University, and CBRM. The Southern Tier has received a $500 million Upstate Revitalization Initiative (URI) award from New York State. The new hires will be expected to strategically contribute to this program. Requirements/Qualifications:
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering or a closely related field. Preferred qualifications include industry or national laboratory experience, as well as teaching experience. Biomedical engineering encompasses biological, physiological, medical and social systems, design, and development of complex, knowledge-intensive systems. Biomedical engineering educates individuals in the art of product and process development for the improvement of human health and quality of life.
The field is excellent for those considering healthcare, agricultural, aquaculture, bioprocesses, biotechnology, environmental, food, microbial system, and rehabilitation engineering.
Graduates are employable in oversight organizations such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), medical centers, and research institutions.
The biomedical engineering curriculum builds upon the base provided by the freshman-year engineering program in Watson College.

The mission of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Binghamt...on University is to
provide interdisciplinary research and education at both undergraduate and graduate
levels. We aim to advance human health and aid in the economic development of the

The BME Department strives to nurture young biomedical engineers who will bridge the
present with the next generation of technologies. The BME Department looks to
cultivate leaders and foster entrepreneurship to advance human health and well-being in
a new medicine era. This is accomplished through the integration of engineering
principles, physical sciences, advanced biology and lifelong learning in biomedical
engineering. With this integration, our students gain an understanding of biophysical
phenomena, disease prevention, diagnostics, disease treatment, health care systems
and regulatory considerations. We engage motivated and talented undergraduate and
graduate students in the classroom, research laboratory and clinic. We impart the spirit
of our mission to them as we prepare them for future careers as professional,
knowledgeable and ethical leaders in academia and industry.
Our students earn a bachelor of science (BS), master of science (MS), doctor of
philosophy (Ph.D.), or a 4+1 accelerated BS/MS combined degree in biomedical
engineering.
