Summary | This position serves as a technical expert in structural engineering of transportation infrastructure. This position will work as part of a team that provides training and customer support to bridge-owning-agency engineers and their consultants on the use of AASHTOWare Bridge Rating software and theory and policy regarding bridge load ratings. They will also engage with other structural engineers and computer programmers to provide interpretation of MDOT and AASHTO Bridge Design Specifications. This position is also responsible for conducting small research projects in fields related to transportation infrastructure. This position serves as an advocate and technical resource for Michigan’s local (city, village, county) transportation agencies and will provide technical support for activities underway at the Center for Technology & Training, which includes work with the Michigan Local Bridge Load Rating and Inspection Support program and the Michigan Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP). The position requires a background in structural engineering and knowledge of the relationship between Michigan’s road owning agencies at the state and local level. | Responsibilities | 1. Create, design, and present structural/transportation related training materials at webinars, workshops, and conferences throughout Michigan and nationally. 2. Organize, coordinate, facilitate and/or lead continuing education and outreach webinars, workshops, conferences (such as Michigan Bridge Week) throughout Michigan. 3. Participate in research related activities awarded to the Center for Technology & Training (CTT) in conjunction with other staff and faculty, including proposal writing, conducting research, planning and management of research projects, report preparation, and presentation of findings on an as-needed basis. 4. Provide engineering technical assistance to Michigan’s local agencies on transportation related issues on an as needed basis 5. Provide technical expertise for engineering related software development projects. 6. Deliver program-related presentations to clients and related professional organizations. 7. Participate on committees, councils, and task forces of related public and private entities. 8. Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff and student assistants. 9. Integrate safety practices into daily activities. | Required Education, Certifications, Licensures | • Bachelor’s degree from ABET accredited college in civil engineering with a background in structural engineering. • Michigan Professional Engineer License or ability to secure one through reciprocity. | Required Experience | • A minimum of three years of experience in civil/structural engineering. • Professional experience using Microsoft Office products.
