The University of Minnesota is seeking a licensed Structural Engineer (.75 - 100% FTE, benefits eligible) to join FMdesign, an internal professional architectural and engineering service delivering practical, economical, constructible, and quality project solutions in support of the University’s mission. Our work primarily supports U-Construction, an internal construction unit, but occasionally provides professional services to other University departments.  Projects range up to $500,000 in construction value. Financially, FMdesign is an internal service organization (ISO), which as an unfunded unit, relies on professional service fees to cover all operating and overhead costs.  This is a fast-paced work environment with annual construction volume of approximately $15 million.

Responsibilities:
This position requires innovative and independent problem-solving skills and professionalism.  Candidates should have the ability to interpret client needs, understand, evaluate, and document existing conditions, and create functional, economical, and quality project solutions. The essential function of this position is to communicate with project team through written documents analysis, reports, and accurate, detailed engineering construction documents.  Candidates need the ability to manage assigned project design budgets and schedules within an accelerated project process.  Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:

80% Design

• Prepare AutoCAD construction documents, calculations, and project specifications for a high volume of small design build projects.
• Assessment of existing structures, including structural systems, building envelope, materials, and performance.
• Make recommendations for the repair and preservation of buildings and structures.
• Work in a consultative role with other departments to provide structural capacity analysis feasibility studies, or recommendations for mitigation and repairs.
• Coordinate consulting structural engineers as needed.
• Provide technical support, construction support and coordination with University U-Construction personnel. 
• Perform periodic site observation, and final inspections
• Provide code analysis, review and interpretation and consultation with University Codes Department as needed.
• Investigate and verify existing building and facility infrastructure conditions affecting the proposed project and the impact of project designs on existing systems.
• Review and track designs and documents prepared by team and outside consultants to ensure conformity with University Construction and Design Standards, principles, and procedures.

10% Project Budget and Schedule

• Deliver projects within planned schedule and allotted budget, in collaboration with Design Lead, and proactively communicate change orders and issues to mitigate in a timely fashion.
• Ensure quality of service and budget health on assigned projects.
• Communicate with Department Manager on project status and circumstances that could affect projects or Clients for all assigned projects.

10% Leadership & Customer Service

• Participate in various University projects, feasibility studies, and what-if scenarios relating to building construction or modification across the state-wide University system.
• Support a customer focused culture with all members of Facilities Management, University Services and the University community.

Work Environment:
Work is performed in an office setting, as well as out in the field.  This position may be exposed to confined spaces, tunnels and potentially hazardous conditions where hearing, visual protection and other personal protective equipment may be required.  Must be able to walk and climb to physically access and view various sites.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree plus at least 3-5 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis from accredited program plus at least 3-5 years of experience. Current PE license in the State of Minnesota or eligible to obtain PE within one year of hire.   
• 3-5 years progressive and comprehensive structural experience as licensed PE.
• Valid driver’s license. Some supervisory experience is desirable.
