The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Plant Physiology and Genetics Research Unit in Maricopa, Arizona seeks a Research Plant Physiologist/Research Agricultural Engineer/Research Agronomist, GS-12/13 ($80,275 to $124,095.00 / per year plus benefits). The overall unit research mission is to increase the productivity, profitability and sustainability of agriculture in arid environments by developing new germplasm for both traditional and alternative crops and by improving plant responses to abiotic stresses in a changing global environment. The position involves providing leadership in planning, interpreting and reporting results of research dealing with 1) Improving ecophysiological models for quantitative prediction of Gene x Environment x Management (G x E x M) interactions through the utilization of tools such as: Cropping System Model (CSM); Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT); Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM); or comparable; 2) Conducting and/or assisting with field-based experiments designed to collect crop-performance data for ecophysiological modeling studies; 3) Within a team or individually developing or improving remote and proximal sensing tools for improved quantification of crop growth and development; 4) Modeling the responses of plants to heat and drought stress, and the effects of plant physiology and soil management on water and energy balance models; and 5) Disseminating experimentally derived databases to collaborating modelers.
