Under general direction of Civil Engineers and Senior Steel Inspectors, the Associate Steel Inspector will perform the more difficult and complex tasks in the quality assurance inspection and testing of fabrication, erection and coating of structural steel bridges and other related materials for compliance with the contract documents, perform field inspections to evaluate the condition of steel members on the Golden Gate Bridge and other duties as required.
Inspection and oversight of welding, bolting, riveting, painting and non-destructive testing during field and shop fabrication, erection, and maintenance of the steel bridge and roadway materials
Take quality assurance samples and perform quality assurance inspections and tests
Make recommendations for acceptance and rejection of work
Write detailed reports of inspections, tests and production rates for observed work
Maintain records and issue reports of inspection and tests as required
Make recommendations in material specifications
Perform oversight and review of quality assurance operations for contractors
Attend conferences and meetings regarding quality assurance
Regular and reliable attendance is required

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
A combination of college level training and position related experience equivalent to:
A minimum of six years inspection experience in the fabrication and erection of welded structural steel members and other components used in the construction of highway bridges and other related structures.
Possession of a current Certified Welding Inspector Certification per the most recent American Welding Society QC1 Document.
Certifiable to NDT Level ll in Ultrasonic, Magnetic Particle, and Dye Penetrant inspection per latest edition of ASNT, SNT-TC-1A guidelines.
The equivalent of an Associate Degree in Welding Technology, Nondestructive Testing, Metallurgy or a related field may be substituted for two of the six years of required work experience.
NACE certification and experience in coatings desirable but not required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, SKILLS:
Familiarity with Caltrans, ASTM and AASHTO specifications, AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code, and AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code
Experience in the performing or monitoring of visual and non-destructive testing as specified by the AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code
Ability to review and interpret structural steel plans, working drawings, and technical specifications
Proficiency in the use of weld, bolt, and paint inspection tools including; weld gauges, NDT equipment, micrometers, paint thickness meters, and bolt tensioning and rotational capacity devices.
Skill in inspection and testing of high strength bolted joints and paint systems used on steel bridges
Ability to write concise, accurate and timely reports of inspections and tests
Ability to perform duties in a noisy, multi faceted, large construction project environment
Ability to perform basic mathematics used in the testing of steel products and welding procedure
Ability to understand and be understood effectively using the English language
Ability to use personal computers and software applicable to the work
Skill in developing and maintaining effective, cooperative and professional relationships with all encountered in the course of the work
Know and follow the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to the job
Must possess and maintain a current, valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
Operates District vehicles on a regular basis.
Must be able to:
Climb ladders, scaffolds, catwalks, bridge members and utilize other devices to access and inspect construction work on the Golden Gate Bridge and other District owned structures and buildings
Stand on one’s feet at construction site locations for extended periods of time
Carry test inspection and survey equipment that may weigh up to 50 pounds
Occasionally crawl through pipes, trenches and other excavations
Work from elevated platforms and heights
Work outside in extreme weather conditions
Work night shifts for extended periods of time
Work at offsite fabrication facilities
Wear a respirator
Travel to and work at out of state fabrication facilities for extended periods of time
