The Institute of Space and Astronautical Science is promoting landing explorations on the gravity bodies, considered to be one of the most important themes in future exploration of the solar-system, based on the close cooperation between engineering and science researchers. The Department of Space Flight Systems is pursuing research and development in order to execute more multifaceted and higher performance scientific observations and explorations. To execute the high-precision landing explorations required from the scientific viewpoint, we must strengthen research on landing technology including high-precision navigation and guidance, landing dynamics, as well as high-precision, high-performance propulsion. In addition, so as to extend the region and capability of the exploration of our solar system, we need to promote the research on deep space mission design, including trajectory and spacecraft system design. The professors being recruited in this announcement must promote innovative academic research in these areas in order to execute sophisticated solar-system exploration missions, and provide strong leadership in the ongoing mission or those being planned utilizing their academic achievements, and thus take leadership towards future goal. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): • Provide academic leadership internationally and contribute to the progress in the fields of landing technology or deep space exploration mission design; • Provide strong leadership as a core member of the team in the ongoing solar-system exploration mission—Smart Lander for Investigating Moon mission (SLIM); or one of the exploration missions currently being planned such as Martian Moons eXplorer mission (MMX), due to be launched in the 2020s; • Provide leadership in planning next-generation solar-system exploration missions in utilizing their academic achievements and engineering experiences; and • Promote collaboration with researchers from other universities and engage in teaching and directing graduate students, based on the understanding that ISAS/JAXA acts as an inter-university research institute.

Required qualifications include: • Experience in research related to deep space exploration, and achievements that are highly evaluated both in Japan and worldwide; • Ability to take leadership of research and development activities in space flight systems related to space science missions; • Experience to have lead a community composed of multi-disciplinary researchers so as to promote innovative research in aerospace engineering, including the ability to take leadership in collaboration between science and engineering; and • Ability to teach and direct graduate students.
