This position will report directly to Borrego Solar’s Principal Structural Engineer.
About the Position: The Structural Engineer will work with a team of design engineers, project managers, engineering consultants, product vendors, and other structural engineers to evaluate and design structural components of ground, roof, and carport mounted solar PV systems for commercial, municipal, and utility clients. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively and efficiently with a team of internal and external resources in a fast moving environment while managing work load and priorities from multiple projects at different stages or progress – all with a focus on quality in engineering and construction.
Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to: • Develop rooftop and ground mounting solutions for commercial, government and utility solar PV projects • Conduct site visits, as needed, to view existing structures and ongoing construction of PV systems • Assist in evaluating solar racking solutions and provide input and feedback on ideas on reducing integration costs • Analysis of existing steel, wood and concrete structures to determine their structural integrity and ability to support PV systems • Prepare design details and assisting in preparation of contract drawings and estimates • Work with junior Engineers as well as develop and document structural standards and techniques for the company • Perform construction administration activities such as review submittals, response to RFI’s, and develop solutions for unforeseen conditions or deviations from the design.
Desired Qualifications: • Civil / Structural engineering degree (BS minimum) • EIT and/or PE certification • Minimum 2-5 years of experience • Must have experience with relevant building codes and standards including experience with components and cladding, snow loads, snow drift, seismic and wind load calculations • Ability to work independently and effectively with project managers, clients, consulting engineers, design and technical personnel as well as product vendors • Must be open minded, creative and possess the ability to modify and expand theories to find creative solutions within the confines of the codes and design standards • Confidence. Must possess the ability to back code interpretations and mathematically prove design concepts • Ability to derive lean value-engineered solutions with an eye for constructability • The successful candidate must be a high energy, resourceful and organized engineering professional. The ability to multi-task and manage or participate in multiple ongoing projects is a must • Solid written and oral communication skills are a must • Computer proficiency with structural design software and MS Office experience • Passionate about solar energy
Preferred Qualifications: • Project management experience • Product development experience • SE license or ability to achieve SE licensure in the next couple years • AutoCAD experience
