To direct and lead all design and estimating work and develop standards and specifications for Power Department work efforts.
Provide Power Department’s input into design of Capital Projects involved with Power Department facilities.
Manage the Design Office Engineer & Technical Staff.
Attend or assure representation at all progress meetings with Capital Engineering or outside consultants to develop constructible designs.
Coordinate design efforts with teams from CDOT and consultants for Power related facilities.
Direct that a system of standards/specifications is developed and maintained for all Power Department apparatus and facilities.
Lead the review of consultant designs to insure product quality and compatibility with MNR Standards.
Direct that record drawings are generated, submitted and maintained for Power Department filing/record systems. Support operations through vigilant upkeep of records, i.e., Plate Orders, Sectionalizing, etc.
Benchmark against other agencies & utilities; evaluate & implement new technologies where appropriate.
Ensure that field modifications that arise in construction are properly documented and implemented in future designs.
Lead the review and approval of contractor construction and design/build submissions.
Must possess working knowledge and understanding of electrical power distribution, medium voltage protection systems, frequency conversion, SCADA and control functionality and related traction power systems.
Competent understanding of electrical codes and standards, OSHA standards, and utility practices.
Must be proficient on AutoCAD 2014 computer software and engineering drafting protocols.
Strong computer skills with proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (and/or comparable PC applications) and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
Strong verbal & written communication skills with the ability to speak effectively in a group setting.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with internal departments and outside agencies
Ability to manage multi-faceted projects and adhere to deadlines.
Must be a self-starter with the ability to provide engineering design solutions to complex problems.
Strong analytical skills and problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve complex technical issues.
Familiarity with Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling and/or comparable systems.
Possess project management skills to develop project scope, progress schedules and budget estimates.
Ability to be self-motivated and to work well with a diverse management/agreement employee workforce.
Knowledge of force accounts and FTE concepts.
Must be able to implement and participate in Metro-North Railroad’s Priority One Safety Program.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Must be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as required.
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and/or Engineering Technology.
Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in a traction power related position.
Minimum of five (5) years of experience managing a professional staff, diverse workforce, and/or project(s).
Professional Engineer (PE) License.
This is a safety sensitive position and subject to toxicology testing. As an employee of Metro-North Railroad you may be required to complete a New York State financial disclosure statement, if you earn more than $95,534.00 or if you hold a position designated as a policy maker. Effective September 2017, all full-time non-agreement personnel other than those directly involved with the movement of trains or delivery of service, or assigned to other emergency response teams, are required to serve in the Station Terminal Auxiliary Response (STAR) program requiring Terminal coverage for Grand Central Terminal (GCT) from 4:30 PM-7:30 PM one week per year or responding to Station STAR duty during a service disruption, system-wide at various hours including nights and weekends. This program is designed to improve Metro-North’s ability to provide customer service during emergencies that impact service delivery or other service disruptions that require staff to provide directions and information to MNR customers at GCT or outlying stations. Please note, hours worked during your participation week are subject to change.

If you are transferring to another craft, you may be required to forfeit your seniority in your present union. Non-agreement employees must have worked in your current position for a minimum of one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline. Along with a background investigation (including but not limited to, employment, education, and criminal history), employees are also subject to an internal investigation, which includes an evaluation not limited to discipline records and performance assessments.
