Metra’s Engineering Department is staffed with over 800 employees who work tirelessly applying technology and engineering principles in the design, construction, operation, and management of our network of infrastructure, facilities, and equipment so that customers can enjoy a safe, comfortable, economical, and dependable transit experience.
Reporting to the Director, Civil Structural Design, the Senior Structural Engineer will manage complex design engineering contracts and oversee the development of bid documents for capital improvements on Metra's System. Determine forces and stresses in structural bridge elements; prescribe safe structural loading conditions, bridge inspection, and maintenance procedures; and design bridge repairs and modifications. Maintain Metra's Bridge Management Program as required by the FRA Bridge Safety Program ensuring bridges are inspected and repairs are made in compliance with safety standards. Represent the Engineering Department on matters requiring Structural Engineering analysis, review, input or decisions. Check projects for compliance with federal, state, local, and Metra design requirements. Lead and collaborate with engineering consultants, contractors, and other railroads and agencies on engineering related projects and matters. Works under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Job Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. In addition, to #1 above, must have seven (7) years of Structural Engineering experience in the design of bridges, buildings, and related structures. Must be a licensed Structural Engineer in the State of Illinois or must be able to obtain license within one (1) year of hire. Considerable knowledge of structural engineering design and construction principles, methods, and standards. Considerable knowledge of materials, techniques, and components of railroad and bridge design. Considerable skill preparing underground utility plans and profiles for structures including: roadways, railways, bridges, and water and sewer systems. Considerable skill reading detailed engineering drawings and interpreting engineering specifications. Strong critical thinking, analytical, and organizational skills. Good verbal and written communication skills. Good interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. Intermediate skill using Microstation and AutoCAD systems. Intermediate skill using Microsoft Project and Office Suite. Ability to evaluate complex engineering problems and apply engineering knowledge to the development of practical and cost effective solutions. Ability to work as a team member or independently on major projects. Must possess a valid driver's license and be willing to travel within and outside of Metra’s 6-county region. Must be available on-call 24-hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year, including weekends and holidays.
